The Saudi Public Investment Fund spent roughly $6 billion building LIV Golf, and this week it officially stopped. Most of the league's 300-plus employees were laid off on September 1st, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing could land as early as next week, and the rescue plan involves private equity, a "LIV 2.0," and purses shrinking from $30 million per event to something like $7 million. We did the math: that is still approximately $7 million more than anything any of us has ever played for.

The details are pure theater. Bryson DeChambeau is reportedly "all-in" on the reboot. Jon Rahm — owed a reported $100 million-plus on his contract — just settled his dispute with the European tour so he has somewhere to play next year, which is the professional-golf equivalent of renewing your gym membership while your house is on fire. One LIV pro got disqualified from DP World Tour qualifying school this week for simply not showing up to his tee time, a level of commitment we frankly respect.

Here's the Divoters take: a golf league is learning what every weekend hacker already knows — the game always collects. You can outspend your swing flaws with $6 billion for a while, but eventually the bill comes due, the shotgun starts stop, and somebody has to make a cut. We've been making cuts all our lives. Mostly into the woods.

LIV 2.0 promises ten events, fewer teams, actual cuts, and players as part-owners. In other words, it's becoming... a golf tour. The most expensive focus group in sports history concludes that golf tournaments should have cuts and owners should care. Our Nassau group figured that out for four dollars a head.
